Wage Theft &
Workers’ Rights
Los Angeles is the wage theft capital of the country. Every day, countless Angelenos are working through meal and rest breaks, not receiving overtime pay, and earning less than the minimum wage. PLPLA fights to get workers the money they are rightfully owed.
Slumlords
Landlords are legally required to provide tenants with a safe and habitable living environment. PLPLA works with community groups to identify and bring to justice slumlords who flout these requirements, endangering their tenants' health or well-being.
Tenant Harassment
A landlord who can’t legally evict a tenant may resort to harassment to pressure the tenant to move out. Recent local laws make that kind of behavior illegal. PLPLA helps protect tenants from harassment by bringing lawsuits against landlords who violate these laws.
Environmental Justice
Marginalized communities often bear the brunt of harmful environmental hazards such as air pollution and water contamination. PLPLA helps communities fight back against corporations who think they can get away with polluting nearby neighborhoods.
Police Misconduct & Excessive Force
Police officers don’t always play by the rules. PLPLA stands up to law enforcement abuses of power when officers use more force than is reasonably necessary to safely contain a situation or commit other types of misconduct that breaches the public trust.
Public Records
California’s public records law grants the public a right to access government records unless they are specifically exempt from disclosure. That doesn’t mean government agencies always follow the law. PLPLA fights to make sure “the people” have access to their records.
LEAD ATTORNEY JOSH NUNI
PLPLA Founder and Lead Attorney Josh Nuni is an experienced litigator and public policy expert. In both state and federal court, he has represented workers who have been subjected to wage theft, discrimination, and harassment in the workplace, victims of police excessive force, and families of individuals who died while incarcerated.
Josh also has extensive public policy experience. He served as Legal and Policy Deputy for Los Angeles Unified School District Board President Jackie Goldberg before taking on the role of Legislative Director for Los Angeles City Councilmember Nithya Raman, working alongside tenants’ rights advocates and environmental justice groups to pass groundbreaking new tenant protections and environmental policies.
A graduate of Harvard University and Yale Law School, Josh trained as an associate attorney at Hadsell Stormer Renick & Dai LLP, one of Southern California’s leading civil rights and employment law firms. He also served as a judicial law clerk for the Honorable LaShann DeArcy Hall in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York, where he managed a federal court docket of civil and criminal cases, including matters of police misconduct, employment discrimination, and tort claims.
Josh has been an active member of the State Bar of California since 2016 and is admitted to practice in the California State Courts, the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.
